Hilliard Field is home to several All-American and NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference champion track and field athletes. Since Wayland does not have a football program, basketball, baseball, soccer, and track take on more significance as varsity athletic programs. The design using manmade grassy berms accommodates West Texas' weather, which can involve high winds that would otherwise make track and field events and soccer impossible. The berms add height and contouring to an otherwise very flat West Texas landscape. They also provide Plainview's version of ski slopes when it snows. References: |
