The first intercollegiate football game on Mount Union's campus was played in 1893 vs. Kenyon College on what was at that time the field of the baseball team. Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, football continued to be played on this athletic field, which had come to be known as Hartshorn Field.
In 1915, the College's Alumni Athletic Association funded the construction of Mount Union Stadium, the oldest National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football stadium in the State of Ohio. It soon became the home of many historic football moments in College history. In 1928, the Mount Union football team played the University of Michigan. At the game, two candidates for Governor of Ohio, Republican Myers Y. Cooper and Democrat Martin L. Davey, campaigned in the stands, sitting on opposites sides of the stadium and switching at half-time.
The first night football game in the Ohio Conference was played at Mount Union in 1930 with the use of a white ball. In the game, Mount Union defeated Kent State University 18-6.
In the 1990s, Mount Union's football team excelled on the field. Under the leadership of head coach Larry Kehres, Mount Union's football team has claimed the NCAA Division III National Title four times in the 90s ('93, '96, '97, '98), making the Purple Raiders the winningest football team in the 90s. The Purple Raiders earned their third consecutive National Championship in 2002, after claiming titles in 2000 and 2001 garnering seven National Championship victories in all.
Today, Mount Union Stadium contains a football field, an all-weather track, a steel and concrete grandstand, concrete bleachers, and dressing and storage rooms. The stadium playing field is made of an artificial surface called AstroPlay. Lights allow for night contests. Stadium capacity is 5,600.
