Narrative: In the Elva Bryan McIver Amphitheater, Meredith and her community have learned from such historic lecturers as former president Jimmy Carter and the former prime minister of Great Britain, the Right Honorable Sir Harold Wilson. The North Carolina Symphony plays its Labor Day concerts there, and it was the scene of the opening ceremonies for the 1987 summertime Olympics Festival. Among the distinguished speakers who have graced the stage are poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney and author Alex Haley. College presidents have also been inaugurated from this platform, and scholars have received earned and honorary degrees there. The Elva Bryan McIver Amphitheater is not only a Meredith possession but a community gathering place. References: Annual Report of Meredith College. [n.d.]. Archives, Meredith College, Raleigh, NC.
